Book Blogger Hop

Book Blogger Hop started over at Crazy for Books it's a great way for bloggers to connect and say hi. I really liked this week's question as it is something I have been thinking about recently.

What keeps you reading beyond the first few pages of a book, and what makes you want to stop reading a book and put it back on the shelf?

I always persevere with a book, I very rarely ditch a book even if I am not really enjoying it. I figure that I have 2 main reasons. Firstly being the eternal optimist that I am (ahem) I'm always thinking "It will pick up in a minute, it's got potential, it will get better" Secondly, being the complete cheapskate that I am, I always think well I've paid for it so I might as well finish it.

When I look at my enormous TBR pile I know I should be more ruthless, why waste time reading something that's a bit meh when there are tonnes of other more fantastically brilliant books out there? However, I can't help thinking that something did make me pick up the book initially, either the blurb sounded good, or I've read a good review so I might just miss something if I don't persevere.
Ultimately, its probably the fear of missing something that keeps me reading!

  1. I try to give every book a chance but I find it very difficult to continue reading a book that doesn't grab me so I don't force myself.

  2. Ha! I'm cheap too. I'm like, "I bought you, you stupid book! Why aren't you any good?" and then I furiously read it. But then, I only buy a book after I've read it or I'm lusting over it that badly.

  3. I'm much the same way, even with library books. Plus curiosity often pulls me through just to find out even if I don't completely care. Books I can't stand or ones that don't make much sense, those I do put down.

  4. I agree. If I paid for the book, it's pretty hard for me not to finish it.

  5. Yup....paying for a book = me trying to trudge my way through it as best I Hope you have a great weekend! :)

  6. I don't know why I keep reading a book. It's not the story. It's not the characters. I really don't know!

I'm hopping by to tell you that I've got a wonderful giveaway going on at my blog, Readerbuzz. It's international! During the Readerbuzz July Giveaway I'll be giving away a $25 Amazon gift card! I'd love to have you stop in and throw your name in the hat to win!

  7. Same here, I can't bring myself to DNF most of the time unless it's just miserable and I can't possibly continue. But that's only happened once. Thanks for stopping by my blog, I'm glad to be a new follower here!

  8. I like to persevere too. I usually muddle through just so I can say I read it.

  9. Hi! Thanks for stopping by my blog! I feel the same way about books. I try my best to finish them because I paid for them. I don't like seeing my money go to waste.

  10. These book blogger hop questions just get better and better. This one looks easy but I think it’s a trick question. We all know it’s the same answer – the writing – but we all have different perspectives of what good writing is.

Hop on over to my blog at and read my three-prong answer as I explain why I’ll decide to pick up a book or put it down in under sixty seconds.

    Happy July 4th Weekend!

  11. Hopping through. I'll give up on library books, but I agree that it's really hard to give up on books that you paid for. It's like wasting food.

  13. Hello, I am your newest follower. My answer to this weeks Book Blogger Hop question:

I started reading a book the last month and it was suppose to be a very good book. But after giving it a couple of chapters I just couldn’t get into it. I put the book aside to read another day. I don’t like to do that because I feel as if my mind might have had too many distractions and I didn’t give the book a chance. So I always try to wait for another day to give it another go. I have so many other books calling to me from my to-be-read list that it can really be distracting. READ ME! READ ME!
I prefer reading and reviewing Christian Fiction but I do read a varity of other books. I just can’t handle too scary or gory. Suspense and Mysteries I like. No explicit adult books either if I do find one I really want to read I just skip over the x-rated stuff. So what genre do I read?

I love getting comments so thanks for taking the time to leave one.
