Expected publication: 29th Sept 2011
My rating: 4.5 out of 5

Featuring necklaces made of wishes; an underground shop dealing in teeth; magical tattoos; a wishbone on a cord, DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE is a thrilling story about Karou and her secret life as an apprentice to a wishmonger. Karou manages to keep her two lives in balance. On the one hand, she is a seventeen-year-old art student in Prague; on the other, errand-girl to an inhuman creature who deals in wishes and is the closest thing she has to family. Her life is surrounded by mysteries she is desperate to unveil.

Vivid characterisation, stunning beautiful writing and original and rich world building; Laini Taylor's Daughter of Smoke and Bone really is the perfect mix of magic, romance and mystery.

Karou is a 17 year old art student living in Prague who has a secret life- her foster family are Chimaera who may actually look like monsters but have lovingly raised Karou as their own. Karou in turn has a real allegiance to them and runs errands for Brimstone the demonic wish monger collecting human teeth for him. The numerous questions I had about Karou- who is she really? where is she from? why can't she open the second door in Brimstone's office? what are the teeth actually for? really kept me guessing and glued to the pages throughout. Her life changes completely when she comes face to face with the dangerous and mysterious angel Akiva and the story of the Seraphim and Chimaera and their centuries long war starts to unravel.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone's uniqueness is that it has both a spellbinding plot and stunning beautiful, finely crafted prose, it just felt completely different and every fine little detail felt completely thought out in glorious technicolour. I adored the chemistry between Karou and Akira which was dark, sensual, delectable and utterly moreish. Overall I thought  Laini Taylor's world building had a subtle bit of genius to it and the ending left me desperate for more.
