I love vampire stories (except for the Twilight series, please don't hate me) so I had a feeling that this would be a great read. Focussing on the life of a young newly-made vampire 'Moth', a girl struggling between her two very different lives: daughter in an Irish Catholic human family and new in the vampire world), this story doesn't make her out to be weak, in fact she kicks ass a lot of the time! After attempting to get over her mothers death by sleeping with a friend, Theo, she hardly expected to be bitten by him and have to endure the pain that is turning into a vampire. She finds out that Theo is in fact over 100 years old and a fairly influential vampire - enough to shock anyone!
Vampires aren't a known element in the human world in this novel; however there are a few humans that do, who call themselves vampire hunters. Whilst Moth is finding her feet as a new vampire, Jason Murdoch is following in his fathers footsteps and trying to find his feet as a vampire hunter. Him and Moth have met on one previous occasion and both bear the scars from this previous battle. When they find themselves together, in the midst of a zombie attack by local teenagers recently murdered, they are forced to work together to save everyone - and to find out just who is causing all of this mess.
Jason and Moth make a great team and the hatred between vampires and vampire hunters is definitely highlighted in this novel in various scenes. Over the course of the novel , however, you do see them bond and become closer as we come closer to the conclusion. When it is revealed who is orchestrating the attacks, it is definitely a shock and there are some great battle scenes as good tries to triumph over evil. I'd totally recommend this to anyone looking for a female character who kicks ass rather than anything remotely girly.
Another of my favourite releases for 2012 - definitely worthy of a five star rating.

ReplyDeleteGreat review Rebecca, I'm also a big fan of heroines who kick ass and this does sound like a nice twist on the whole tried vampire vs vampire hunter story.
